The way architecture, landscaping and gardening complement each other is fantastic. It is thanks to this complementarity that magnificent spaces are created.

Discover in this article how Man interacts with the landscape, landscape architecture and the landscaping / gardening relationship.

Man and the landscape

The ability to interpret, modify and control the environment in which it lives in the offspring of its development allowed Man to evolve and create what we call landscape: “An area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and / or human factors” (Convenção Europeia da Paisagem).

Landscape is par excellence the object of study and work of landscape architecture. In this way, the landscape architect is a professional with a multidimensional training, capable of interpreting natural systems and socioeconomic processes, designing and planning the environment which we live so that it is more efficient, functional, capable and balanced.

Objectively, landscape architecture can be defined as the design of the territory, from the small garden to the country scale, with the aim of achieving environmental, social, behavioral or aesthetic results. It involves the systematic investigation of existing social and ecological conditions and processes in the landscape and the design of interventions that will produce the desired result.

Architecture? Landscape architecture?

According to Frank Lloyd Wright in In the Realm of Ideas, “Architecture is that great living creative spirit which, from generation to generation, continues, persists, creates, according to the nature of man, and his circumstances as they change. This is really architecture. “

Architecture is traditionally related to the building, with built space, while landscaping, sometimes called landscaping, is commonly related to natural systems. However, ultimately and regardless of the name given, there is a common knowledge that studies the Man and his circumstances, and is based on the knowledge acquired to think and design the environment in which he lives, optimizing it. The so-called landscaping is just one of the intervention areas of landscape architecture.

The activities of a landscape architect can range from the creation of public parks and gardens, to urban planning, to planning corporate office parks, from residential property planning to managing large natural areas or restoring degraded landscapes such as mines or landfills. Each landscape architecture project is unique, making this area even more relevant!

Landscape design, architecture, landscaping and gardening

The landscape design is one of the areas that landscape architecture covers, and can be defined as the detailed project for residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and public areas. It involves site analysis, the development of design concepts, the balance between interior and exterior spaces, the selection of building materials and plants, and the preparation of detailed building plans to support the work.

Assuming that natural systems are par excellence one of the basic tools of landscape architecture, gardening is for landscape architecture as the building is for architecture.

Gardening is an art with ancient origins, and it presupposes a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of plants, such as their colors, flowering times, water, light, and nutrient needs, as well as the best ways of conducting each species. This is a knowledge of operational scope that complements the landscape architecture, which serves as the basis for the development of this.

In the words of the architect Luis Barragan “I do not divide architecture, landscape and gardening; to me they are one.”
